Horns Rev 2 (HR 2) is an offshore wind farm located between 27 km and 41 km off Esbjerg on the west coast of the Jutland Peninsula in Denmark. The site was designed to accommodate a total of 91 individual wind turbine generators, each rated at 2.3 MW, which are connected via 3 6kV submarine power cables to an offshore transformer platform.
The development of the HR2 project was scheduled to be carried out under a multi-contract arrangement, the in-field submarine power cable installation for which was considered a single component of the whole scope of work.
Offshore power cable installation was scheduled to take place in two distinct phases: Phase 1 in 2008 and Phase 2 in 2009.
Visser and Smit Hanab (VSH) was awarded the contract for the cable installation and burial work on the HR 2 Wind Farm project by DONG Energy A/S.
VSH itself sub-contracted joint-venture partners, VolkerWessels Boskalis Marine Solutions (VBMS) and Global Marine Systems Ltd (GMSL), the contract for two work packages. The contracted work consisted of the installation and burial of the infield and power cables between the wind turbines and the offshore high-voltage station (OHVS).
