In the late 2000’s, Visser & Smit Hanab noticed a worldwide need to diversify energy sources and protect and maintain the integrity of offshore cables. With a higher global population and concern about environmental impact, Visser & Smit Hanab wanted to leverage the potential in sustainable offshore energy sources.
In 2007, VolkerWessels' launched a new subsidiary called VSMC (Visser & Smit Marine Contracting). Armed with its cable expertise and sound contracting principles – along with a large and highly skilled workforce – VSMC experienced a dramatic increase in productivity. The company was a success.
In 2013, Boskalis acquired a 50% stake in VSMC. By joining forces, VSMC was able to leverage its existing resources and assets with those of Boskalis, allowing them to fulfil even larger contracts, and to draw on the power of two successful companies.
In 2014, VSMC was renamed VBMS. VBMS is now an established subsea installation provider with a yearly turnover of approx. €250 million, offering total subsea power installation solutions for offshore grids, onshore and in shallow and deep water.
In July 2016, Boskalis acquired offshore wind energy-related activities from VolkerWessels, these being VBMS, Stemat and VSI (Volker Stevin International). VBMS became a fully-fledged subsidiary of Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V.
